I am very fortunate and glad I went to this event. Sad to report it was the last time I saw Dan Hicks perform. It was a great night as was the previous evening at Piper’s Opera House.

Charlatans at Piper’s Opera House

I loved The Charlatans when I first came to SF in July 66. Dan was the drummer and some of the songs he wrote in the band ended up being standards with His Hot Licks in the 70s, like “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away?” I grew up on Dan Hicks’ music thanks to one of my oldest friends, Jaime Leopold, original Hot Licks bassist. I remain a huge fan of what Dan, Jaime, Maryann, Naomi, Symphony Sid Page, John Girton created in that magic period. The Dan Hicks Songbook will endure.
