Patti Smith’s 2nd California rock show, at Rather Ripped Records, Berkeley, CA, 1974. Original photograph for sale, direct from artist. Click link.
Honeymooning in 1974, an epic cross-country tour, San Francisco to New York and back. My wife was a poet and when in New York there was a big reading at St. Marks Church on the Bowery, with Ginsberg, Ann Waldman, and others but the show stealer was the astonishing new voice of Patti Smith. She blew the house down. Not long after returning to San Francisco, I was fortunate to spot a listing in the Bay Guardian–Patti Smith appearing at Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley. She was making her 2nd (according to her memoir, “Just Kids”) West Coast appearance, singing with her soon to be very famous band, Richard Sohl and Lenny Kaye, an in-store promotion for her first single “Hey Joe/Piss Factory.” I’m pretty sure I was the only photographer there to capture this historic occasion. Exclusive, first time edition, direct from the source.
